Stargate Hydrogen has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Saudi Arabia’s Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDI), marking a key step in expanding its green hydrogen operations in the Middle East.

The agreement was signed in Riyadh on September 8, 2025, as the European-born green hydrogen technologies manufacturer announced plans to establish its regional headquarters in the Saudi capital. The move strengthens the Kingdom’s ambition to position itself as a global hub for clean energy, aligned with Vision 2030.

“This partnership with Stargate Hydrogen underscores a shared commitment to advancing green hydrogen technologies. By strengthening collaborative innovation between global leaders and local institutions, we help create shared opportunities that accelerate the Kingdom’s transition toward sustainability, while contributing to global progress in clean energy,” said Dr. Yazeed, Executive Director of Institutional Funding, Acting Vice Governor for Ecosystem Development.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The MoU outlines several areas of collaboration aimed at accelerating technology transfer and building local innovation capacity. Stargate Hydrogen will launch Stargate Hydrogen KSA, its new Riyadh-based headquarters, focused on deep-tech solutions for hydrogen production.

The company also plans to localise its proprietary technologies for Saudi deployment, partner with institutions such as KAUST to generate intellectual property in the Kingdom, and collaborate with local manufacturers to develop domestic capacity for electrolyser technologies.

Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “Saudi Arabia offers a unique and globally competitive environment to scale transformative technologies. Through this partnership with RDI, Stargate Hydrogen will drive IP generation, support local talent, and contribute to the Kingdom’s ambition of becoming a global leader in clean energy.”

A joint steering committee will be established to oversee the partnership, with dedicated teams from both sides managing operations. Regular workshops and stakeholder engagements are planned to ensure collaboration across government, academia, and industry.

The cooperation was facilitated by Apex Ventures under RDI’s Global Startups Attraction Program, in collaboration with the Ministry of Investment. The program is designed to strengthen local technological capabilities while fostering international partnerships in sustainable industries.
