Rail transportation stands poised for a significant transformation, as Wallenius Wilhelmsen unveils groundbreaking solutions to empower mobility and commerce worldwide. With an estimated 1.1 billion individual journeys projected by 2028, railroads remain integral to the global transportation landscape, facilitating the movement of people and goods with unparalleled efficiency. As demand for safe and reliable transportation solutions surges, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s innovative approach promises to revolutionize the rail industry.

Recently, Wallenius Wilhelmsen celebrated a milestone achievement with the arrival of the first train comprising six railcars at Port Kembla, Australia, aboard the vessel Themis. These cutting-edge railcars, measuring 26 meters in length and weighing 45 tons each, mark a significant leap forward in sustainable mass transportation. Jesper Lagerbäck, Acting Head of Global Industrial Account Development, highlighted the company’s commitment to shaping decarbonized transportation, emphasizing the pivotal role of rail cargo in fostering a sustainable future.

Collaborating closely with manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) and forwarder Kaleido, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s technical experts devised a unique solution to facilitate the seamless transfer of railcars from road to vessel. By leveraging specialized equipment and meticulous planning, the railcars could be shipped fully assembled, eliminating the need for crane lifts and minimizing the risk of damage.

Fredrik Hedin, Breakbulk Technical Expert, underscored the importance of preparation and expertise in ensuring the safe loading and transportation of cargo. With decades of experience in RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) operations, Hedin and his team meticulously orchestrated the loading process, employing Multi-Purpose Boogies (MPBs) to facilitate the smooth transfer of railcars without crane lifts. This innovative approach not only enhanced operational efficiency but also minimized the risk of damage during transit.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s rail expertise extends across its global network, with specialized support teams stationed in key manufacturing hubs such as Spain. Raoul Vega, Head of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Iberia, highlighted the company’s unwavering commitment to providing tailored transportation solutions for OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and forwarders. As governments worldwide invest in expanding their rail networks, Wallenius Wilhelmsen stands ready to support the influx of rail products from new production facilities.

The successful delivery of railcars to Port Kembla exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable transportation solutions. Jesper Lagerbäck commended the strong partnership between Wallenius Wilhelmsen, CAF, Kaleido, and other stakeholders, emphasizing the company’s core values of care, commitment, and willingness to challenge norms. This project serves as a testament to Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s vision for a more sustainable and interconnected world.
