ABB Powers Up Canadian Coast Guard’s Cutting-Edge Icebreaker

Seaspan Shipyards has selected ABB to deliver a Major advances in icebreaker technology integrated propulsion system for the inaugural Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) polar class icebreaker. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Canadian maritime history, showcasing a leap forward in icebreaking technology.

Over the last 25 years iceberaking technoogy has come together in the ‘Universal Polar Icebreaker’, a concept that goes a major step beyond what traditional designs can achieve while using thoroughly proven marine systems technology, including propulsion.

Setting Sail to the Future

Scheduled for deployment in 2030, the icebreaker is poised to become one of the world’s largest and most powerful diesel-electric vessels. ABB’s system, designed to meet IACS Polar Class 2 standards, will empower the icebreaker with 34MW of propulsive power, featuring a single shaftline and twin Azipod® units. Not only does this enhance efficiency and reliability, but the Azipod® propulsors also promise superior maneuverability in icy waters.

Canadian Innovation Takes the Helm

This project positions ABB as the single system integrator, overseeing engineering, delivery, and commissioning of the comprehensive propulsion package. The vessel will join an esteemed list of 150 icebreaking vessels equipped with ABB’s proven propulsion technology, underlining the company’s prowess in the maritime sector.

Charting New Waters

As part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), this venture represents a significant stride in renewing the federal fleet. With the impending retirement of the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, the new icebreaker steps in as a vital addition to the CCG fleet. Beyond patrolling the Canadian coastline, its responsibilities span supporting Arctic science, environmental response, and search and rescue operations.

Praise and Partnership

Leo Martin, Senior Vice President – Programs at Seaspan Shipyards, commended ABB’s role, stating, “ABB’s proven technology, along with their valuable insight, made them a natural fit for this project.” Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, Mario Pelletier, expressed eagerness for the vessel’s construction, emphasizing its crucial role in high Arctic operations.

ABB’s Continued Maritime Momentum

Markus Astor, Head of ABB Marine & Ports, Canada, expressed honor in contributing to the project, highlighting ABB’s innovative technology and solutions. This partnership solidifies ABB’s growing presence in naval and coast guard sectors, following successful collaborations with the CCG and the Norwegian Coast Guard.
