Abu Dhabi, November 11, 2024: Al Seer Marine (ADX: ASM), a key player in the maritime sector and a subsidiary of International Holding Company (ADX: IHC), and Damen International, part of the well-known Damen Shipyards Group, have announced an ambitious expansion of their joint venture, Dune. Established in 2022, Dune initially focused on naval shipbuilding but is now extending its reach into commercial maritime—a strategic move aimed at solidifying its place as a leader in both naval and commercial shipbuilding.
The joint venture brings together the expertise and resources of Al Seer Marine, with its advanced production facilities in Abu Dhabi, and Damen International’s extensive experience in shipbuilding, backed by its family-run shipyards across the Middle East. Through this strengthened partnership, Dune aims to tap into the global shipbuilding market and provide a range of services beyond vessel construction. These include technical, operational, and commercial vessel management, as well as project management, financial oversight, and international maritime sales and acquisitions, catering to a diverse clientele from the UAE and beyond.
This expansion into commercial shipbuilding aligns with Dune’s broader vision of becoming a global player in maritime solutions. According to Al Seer Marine’s CEO, Guy Neivens, the joint venture is primed to produce more than 26 vessels by the end of 2025, all built within the UAE. “With Damen’s strong shipbuilding legacy and our state-of-the-art production capabilities here in the UAE, we’re well-equipped to deliver high-quality, innovative maritime solutions for a range of commercial and naval clients,” Neivens said.
Dune’s growing footprint is bolstered by a robust pipeline of projects, extending its focus on innovation and sustainability through advanced technologies. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and other advanced manufacturing technologies, Dune is committed to delivering efficient and environmentally friendly solutions. This tech-forward approach positions Dune to better meet the evolving demands of the industry, from operational efficiency to sustainability.
Annelies Damen, a Board Member of Damen International, highlighted the alignment between Dune’s goals and the UAE’s vision for the future of its maritime industry. “With our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability, we are proud to be a part of the UAE’s mission to become a global maritime hub. Our shipyards in Sharjah, Fujairah, and Dubai allow us to offer a comprehensive infrastructure to support Dune’s mission and expand our reach in the region,” Damen stated.
As Dune scales its operations and navigates new markets, the venture will continue to support the UAE’s broader vision by fostering local talent, advancing sustainable practices, and delivering top-tier services within the maritime industry. Positioned to drive growth and set new standards, Dune is making a calculated and timely move into commercial shipbuilding—a decision that is sure to shape the maritime landscape across the region and beyond.
