Bahamas Port Embraces Green Technology with Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 Mobile Harbor Crane

Arawak Port Development Limited (APD) has made a significant investment in eco-friendly infrastructure. The company has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.6 mobile harbor crane to bolster its operations at the Port of Nassau. This cutting-edge crane will mark a milestone as the first of its kind at the port to operate solely on mains power, ensuring zero emissions during its operation.

APD, known for managing one of the largest port facilities in the Caribbean, is strategically expanding its Nassau terminal to accommodate the surging demand in container handling. With the acquisition of this state-of-the-art Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 mobile harbor crane, APD aims to harness its high capacity, exceptional performance, and notably, its environmentally friendly electric operation.

“This new crane is poised to effectively manage the burgeoning container business, and the decision to power it from the harbor mains underscores our unwavering commitment to decarbonization,” remarked Rudolph Tener-Knowles, Assistant Vice-President of Operations and Facilities at APD. He also highlighted the value of Konecranes’ digital services in monitoring the crane’s performance and condition, ensuring optimal efficiency.

The significance of this investment extends beyond APD’s operational enhancements. It speaks volumes about The Bahamas’ dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Marc Wellenberg, Regional Sales Manager for the America Region, Port Solutions at Konecranes, emphasized the pivotal role of ports in the island nation’s economy. He expressed pride in APD’s decision to entrust Konecranes once again, citing their Generation 6 cranes’ capability to meet the demands of a market that prioritizes performance, reliability, and eco-efficiency.

The contract with APD aligns seamlessly with Konecranes’ overarching vision of Ecolifting, a commitment to not only reduce customers’ carbon footprints but also to amplify the positive environmental impact of their products and services. By offering solutions that range from eco-optimized diesel drives to fully electrified fleets, Konecranes is actively contributing to sustainable practices in the material handling industry.
