Cargill Unveils World’s First Zero-Emission Electric Pusher and Barge Duo

Cargill is commissioning the world’s first zero-emission electric pusher and barge combination: the E-Pusher and E-Barges from KOTUG International. The E-Pusher and E-barges are used to transport cocoa beans in the port of Amsterdam in a sustainable way to Cargill’s cocoa factory in Zaandam.

The emission-free E-pusher is completely free of harmful emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). The electric push boats and push barges are expected to reduce CO2 emissions during transport by 190 tons per year. This is equivalent to 15,000 journeys of the same distance by truck. The E-Pusher 1 will sail on green electricity from the wind farm that Cargill and Vattenfall operate together with Windpark Hanze.

As the largest cocoa import port in the world, a lot of cocoa beans enter the port of Amsterdam. This sustainable mode of transport is in line with our vision of clean shipping and contributes to our goal of being a climate-neutral port by 2050.
