Clarksons Specialised Products has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies. This strategic collaboration aims to pave the way for a maritime supply chain dedicated to the bulk transportation of green hydrogen using Hydrogenious’ Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology.
Empowering Clean Hydrogen Trade
Clarksons, renowned for its expertise in the chemical tanker market, will leverage its global coverage and insights to shape shipping strategies and navigate regulatory landscapes. The collaboration seeks to provide innovative solutions aligning with Hydrogenious’ vision of large-scale clean hydrogen commercialization. This joint effort underlines Clarksons’ commitment to fostering global trade while championing the widespread adoption of clean hydrogen to meet decarbonization targets.
Hydrogenious’ Revolutionary LOHC Technology
Hydrogenious specializes in Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology, offering a safe and cost-efficient means of long-distance hydrogen transport. By chemically binding hydrogen molecules to LOHC, specifically the thermal oil benzyltoluene, the fluid becomes easily storable and transportable through existing chemical tanker fleets. At the destination, hydrogen is released on demand, ensuring high purity for various applications, including industrial use, energy production, and mobility.
Decarbonizing Maritime Industry
With onboard LOHC release units on hydrogen-powered ships, this collaboration introduces the prospect of using LOHC technology for safe and efficient hydrogen fuel handling. This initiative aligns with the maritime industry’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize, marking a significant step towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for shipping.
Gunnar Broeker, Divisional Director Specialised Products at Clarksons Deutschland GmbH, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “It’s great to be part of a solution that will bring cutting-edge, sustainable technologies to the fore, making a meaningful contribution towards global decarbonization goals.”
Dr. Toralf Pohl, Chief Commercial Officer at Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies, emphasized the compatibility of their LOHC technology with long-distance maritime supply chains. He said, “We are excited to be working with the world’s leading shipbroker in Clarksons and to benefit from their immense expertise in shipping, trade, and energy transition.“
Looking Ahead
As the maritime industry continues to seek eco-friendly alternatives, this collaboration aims to address the complexities of transporting hydrogen, unlocking new possibilities for its widespread adoption. The partnership between Clarksons and Hydrogenious signals a pivotal moment in the journey towards a cleaner, greener future for maritime trade.
