In a complex feat of maritime logistics, Deugro has successfully overseen the transport of four colossal Liebherr cranes—a total of 1,844 tons—from Rostock, Germany, to key ports in Australia and New Zealand. This operation is more than just a heavy-lift achievement; it represents careful planning, expert engineering, and exceptional collaboration among top industry partners, all working to overcome the unique challenges presented by this massive cargo.
The cranes, each destined for different ports across the Pacific, included an LPS 550, two LHM 550s, and an LHM 600. After being loaded in Germany, the cranes were transported via a heavy-lift vessel operated by United Heavy Lift GmbH & Co. KG, a company known for managing oversized cargo on international routes. Along the way, the vessel made stops to unload each crane at its designated port: the LPS 550 was delivered to Brisbane, followed by an LHM 550 in Port Kembla and another in Timaru. Finally, the journey ended with the delivery of the LHM 600 to Port Nelson, New Zealand, completing an impressive display of precision logistics.

The primary challenge of this operation lay in configuring a loading plan that could accommodate multiple crane models on a single vessel with limited deck space. Each crane type has different specifications, which meant Deugro and its partners had to carefully strategize not only the loading sequence but also the lashing setup to ensure stability during ocean transit. The deck space was limited, and lashing points had to be expertly calculated to prevent any movement while at sea, particularly given the unpredictable weather conditions along the Pacific route. The engineering and logistics teams managed this puzzle through detailed planning and collaboration, ensuring that each crane remained secured and arrived in optimal condition.

This multi-stage delivery was made possible by the teamwork of several key industry players, including BTV, Karpack, and dteq Transport Engineering Solutions. Each partner contributed specialized knowledge and services, from loading arrangements to custom engineering solutions, allowing the cranes to be placed, balanced, and secured in a way that would be near impossible without such a coordinated effort.
These cranes, now set up at their respective ports, bring significant operational upgrades to each location. The LPS 550, designed for high performance in port handling, offers advanced bulk and container handling capabilities, while the LHM 550s and the larger LHM 600 are built to handle a wide range of cargo types, making them indispensable to the ports they now call home. Their arrival is expected to boost productivity and support growing cargo demands in Australia and New Zealand.
This journey underscores not only Deugro’s expertise in managing complex project logistics but also the critical role that collaboration plays in the world of heavy-lift transport. Successfully transporting 1,844 tons of machinery across continents is no simple task, and it’s a testament to the dedication and skill of all involved.
