Dublin Port Company Unveils Significant Update on 3FM Project

Dublin Port Company (DPC) has announced a substantial update on its 3FM Project, reflecting extensive consultation and considerations of alternative options. These changes aim to enhance public realm lands, optimize the district heating scheme, and address concerns regarding visual and noise impacts.

The 3FM Project focuses on expanding port capacity for unitized cargo on port-owned lands on the Poolbeg Peninsula. It encompasses constructing a new bridge across the River Liffey as part of the Southern Port Access Route (SPAR) and establishing a Maritime Village along with enhanced public amenities and community spaces.

Reconfigured Area O: Originally, a Lo-Lo (container) storage facility was planned for Area O, but based on feedback and reviews, a new allocation of land has been determined. Area L, adjacent to the quayside, will now serve as the LoLo container storage facility. Area O will be repurposed as a Roll-On Roll-Off (RoRo) unaccompanied freight terminal, offering ground-level freight trailer storage.

New Maritime Village: Dublin Port Company has achieved broad agreement on the design of a new Maritime Village, catering to various maritime interest groups. This facility will provide modern amenities, improved waterside access, viewing opportunities, and a public plaza area.

Lifting Bridge / SPAR: The 3FM Project includes constructing a new bridge across the River Liffey to divert port and commercial traffic from surrounding roads.

Codling Wind Park: An additional 3.7 acres will be allocated to Codling Wind Park for on-shoring off-shore renewable energy.

Rail Freight Access: Discussions with Irish Rail are progressing positively to provide rail access for all port terminals. The SPAR will facilitate rapid road shunting of containers from the 3FM Project to rail intermodal facilities.

Barry O’Connell, Chief Executive of Dublin Port Company, emphasized the importance of genuine engagement in the consultation process, resulting in sustainable planning. The updated plans aim to strike a balance between stakeholder interests, and stakeholders will have an opportunity to review and provide feedback during the statutory public consultation process.

The announcement signifies a significant step forward in the development of the 3FM Project, highlighting Dublin Port Company’s commitment to transparent and collaborative infrastructure planning.
