The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) and the European Transport Workers Federation (ETF) have come together to kickstart the ‘Seafarers Go Digital’ initiative, aimed at addressing the challenges posed by digitalization in the maritime industry. Launched on July 10, 2024, this initiative underscores the commitment of both organizations to support shipping and seafarers in their digital transition.
With the rapid advancement of digital technologies, the maritime industry faces a critical need to adapt. ‘Seafarers Go Digital’ highlights the importance of updating international regulations, revising training programs, and modifying operational practices to embrace digitalization. The initiative seeks to safeguard seafarers’ employment rights and well-being, emphasizing areas like onboard digitalization, cybersecurity, internet access, e-certification, and digital skills development.
“Supporting shipping and seafarers in the digital transition is a key priority for European Shipowners,” remarked Sotiris Raptis, ECSA Secretary General. He pointed out the necessity of upskilling and reskilling seafarers to ensure they can safely and effectively use new digital tools and technologies. Raptis also noted that digitalization could make the maritime profession more attractive and diverse, providing opportunities both at sea and onshore, and encouraging the participation of women and other underrepresented groups.
Echoing these sentiments, Livia Spera, ETF Secretary General, emphasized the importance of preparing maritime professionals for the digital age while safeguarding their rights, welfare, and safety. “The ‘Seafarers Go Digital’ initiative responds to the need of preparing maritime professionals for the digital age. Digitalization can be an opportunity and help improve the attractiveness of maritime professions,” said Spera. She highlighted the commitment to promoting a fair and inclusive digital transition that balances opportunities with risk mitigation, contributing to a sustainable future for seafarers.
The launch event in Brussels featured notable speakers, including Barbara Sellier, Acting Head of Unit Maritime Safety at the European Commission, Manuela Tomassini, Head of Department at the European Maritime Safety Agency, and Rhiannon Ducas, representing the WESS Project. Their insights underscored the collaborative effort behind ‘Seafarers Go Digital’, building on the outcomes of joint ECSA-ETF projects like WESS and SkillSea.
This initiative is a significant step towards modernizing the maritime industry, ensuring that seafarers are not left behind in the digital age. By fostering cooperation between industry stakeholders, policymakers, and unions, ‘Seafarers Go Digital’ aims to create a supportive environment for maritime professionals to thrive amid technological advancements.
