Shipyard leaders discuss next steps for future collaboration

Iskra Shipyard has taken another step in expanding its cooperation with Fincantieri following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding involving Iskra Shipyard, 3. Maj Shipyard and the Italian shipbuilding group.

The latest meeting brought senior representatives together at the Croatian shipyard to discuss future cooperation and review the facility’s capabilities. Roko Vuletić, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Iskra Shipyard and 3. Maj Shipyard, welcomed Mauro Manzini of Fincantieri and Daniele Zaccagnino for a site visit and a series of discussions focused on potential joint activities.

The visit follows the signing of the MoU, which establishes a framework for closer cooperation between the companies as they explore opportunities in naval shipbuilding and broader maritime projects.

Focus on Croatian shipbuilding expertise

The discussions centred on strengthening Croatia’s shipbuilding capabilities and identifying areas where international cooperation could support future programmes.

Shipbuilding has always depended on partnerships that combine technical expertise, industrial capacity and long term planning. The agreement reflects that approach by bringing together Croatian shipbuilding experience with the resources and international reach of one of Europe’s largest shipbuilders.

According to Iskra Shipyard, the shared objective is to support future naval programmes while creating opportunities for cooperation that could strengthen the country’s maritime and defence industries.

Although no specific projects, investment figures or contract values were announced, the continued engagement between the partners indicates that the Memorandum of Understanding is moving beyond a formal agreement and into practical discussions.

Building international industrial links

The meeting also highlights a wider trend across the European shipbuilding sector, where companies are increasingly seeking cross border partnerships to meet growing demand for naval vessels, defence capabilities and specialised maritime assets.

For Croatian shipyards, international collaboration offers access to broader industrial networks while allowing domestic facilities to contribute specialist expertise to larger programmes.

The visit by Fincantieri representatives provided an opportunity to review existing infrastructure and exchange views on how future cooperation could be developed. Discussions also focused on reinforcing Croatia’s role within European shipbuilding through shared industrial capabilities and technical cooperation.

The companies said they share a common vision of advancing Croatian shipbuilding expertise, supporting future naval programmes and creating new opportunities through international collaboration. They also described the initiative as part of broader efforts to reinforce the long term competitiveness of Croatia’s maritime and defence sectors.
