Jan De Nul Group’s BELREEFS Project: Pioneering Oyster Reef Restoration in the Belgian North Sea

Before 1850, flat oyster reefs were abundant in the North Sea. Over time, human activity and a persistent oyster parasite led to their near extinction. Recognizing the importance of these reefs as crucial ecosystems providing habitats for various marine species, a new initiative has been launched to restore them. Enter BELREEFS, the first offshore pilot project for large-scale oyster reef restoration in the Belgian North Sea, commissioned by the Federal Public Service for Health.

The BELREEFS project is a collaborative effort between Jan De Nul Group, the Institute for Nature Sciences, Shells & Valves, and Mantis Consulting, all working under the guidelines of the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA). This partnership bridges industry and science to tackle the complex task of reef restoration, requiring innovative and creative solutions. The logistical challenges and the oysters’ sensitivity to disturbance during seeding, transport, and installation demand expertise from multiple fields.

Vicky Stratigaki, an engineer and project coordinator for BELREEFS at Jan De Nul Group, emphasized the project’s long-term vision: “We aim to create a self-sustaining oyster reef that supports natural restoration without further human intervention. One of the strategies we’re employing is to install the oyster reefs in their historical locations, known as gravel beds.”

The project has begun its implementation phase, with teams meticulously planning and executing the restoration efforts. By placing the reefs where they once thrived, the project aims to rebuild a vital part of the marine ecosystem. This initiative not only seeks to restore biodiversity but also to enhance the natural resilience of the North Sea.

Jan De Nul Group’s involvement in BELREEFS demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in offshore engineering. By collaborating with scientific institutions and leveraging their extensive expertise in marine construction, Jan De Nul is setting a precedent for future ecological restoration projects.

The BELREEFS project, with its ambitious goals and collaborative approach, stands as a beacon of hope for the restoration of oyster reefs in the North Sea. As the project progresses, it promises to provide valuable insights and a replicable model for similar environmental initiatives worldwide.
