Keel Laying Ceremony Celebrates Milestone in Indian Maritime Education

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) proudly announced the successful keel laying ceremony for the inaugural Cadets’ Training Ship, held at L&T’s shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai, India. This significant event marks the beginning of a new era in maritime education and indigenous shipbuilding.

As the flagship of a trio of vessels currently under construction under IRS Classification, the Cadets’ Training Ship is designed to accommodate 210 Naval cadets, including 60 female cadets and international trainees. The vessel’s completion is anticipated by October 2026, signifying a crucial step forward in bolstering maritime training capabilities.

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, these Cadets’ Training Ships are poised to become maritime learning hubs. Offering hands-on experience, practical skills training, and theoretical knowledge, they aim to meet the evolving requirements of the Indian Navy and international partners. Additionally, the ships are versatile, with the capability to be deployed for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, showcasing their multifaceted utility.

Cdr. KK Dhawan (Retd), Head Defence of IRS, expressed immense satisfaction in commemorating the keel laying ceremony, emphasizing IRS’s unwavering commitment to supporting Indian shipbuilding. Notably, a significant portion of the equipment and systems for these vessels will be sourced from indigenous manufacturers, showcasing IRS’s dedication to promoting self-reliance and supporting Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). He reiterated IRS’s pride in contributing to the Indian Navy’s agenda for indigenous shipbuilding and aligning with the Government of India’s vision of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.

The keel laying ceremony symbolizes a collaborative effort between IRS, L&T Shipyard, and various stakeholders, marking a milestone in India’s journey towards maritime self-sufficiency. It underscores the nation’s commitment to nurturing skilled maritime professionals and fostering innovation in shipbuilding, ultimately strengthening India’s position in the global maritime arena.
