Klaipėda Port has entered the technical design phase for its largest-ever expansion — the development of its southern sector — covering an area of 100 hectares. The project aims to secure a construction permit by year-end while seeking local and international investor interest.
The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority confirmed that technical designers have already started detailed engineering work on the southern port development, marking a significant milestone for Lithuania’s largest maritime gateway.
“This project is a major step forward for Klaipėda Port – and an important move for Lithuania as a whole. Every decision brings new jobs, more financial returns for the state, and growing interest from investors,” said Algis Latakas, Director General of the Port Authority. “Preparing the technical design is a demanding phase. We must assess the current situation, propose integrated engineering solutions, and align the interests of multiple stakeholders. We are fully prepared to take on this challenge.”
Engineering Scope and Infrastructure Upgrades
The southern development design will address critical infrastructure needs, including:
- An entrance channel at least 200 meters wide.
- A turning circle for large vessels.
- A quay extending a minimum of 1,300 meters.
- A new underground power cable line.
- Engineering within the gas pipeline protection zone.
- Utility ducts for a future container terminal, including shore power supply.
Design work is being led by Aplan in partnership with HaskoningDHV Nederland B.V., both tasked with completing the technical documentation and securing the necessary approvals before the end of 2025.
Call for Expressions of Interest
In parallel, the Port Authority has issued a request for expressions of interest (EOI) to qualified port terminal operators, industrial developers, and investors worldwide. The invitation outlines a proposed public-private partnership framework and potential commercial arrangements for the southern development.
This expansion comes in response to Klaipėda’s limited available space for new terminals. The southern sector project is expected to increase capacity for large-scale cargo operations and improve the port’s competitiveness in attracting foreign investment.
Capacity for Larger Vessels and New Marina
Upon completion, the expanded southern area will be capable of accommodating some of the world’s largest vessels, strengthening Klaipėda’s position in the Baltic maritime network. The plan also includes a new marina with berthing for up to 500 recreational boats, addressing a long-standing shortage of facilities for leisure craft in the region.
The southern development is expected to reshape Klaipėda’s operational landscape, providing both commercial cargo facilities and recreational amenities within the same port district. This dual-purpose approach reflects a growing trend in port planning — integrating commercial efficiency with community access to waterfront areas.
