Konecranes has strengthened its position in the Spanish crane services market after acquiring the nuclear service and port service businesses of Coapsa Control SL, a specialist based in Viladecavalls, near Barcelona. The transaction became effective on 1 July and forms part of Konecranes’ strategy to expand both its Industrial Services and Port Services operations across Spain. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition brings an experienced workforce into the Konecranes organization while adding a new operational location in Catalonia. For customers operating ports and industrial facilities, the move is expected to broaden local service coverage and technical expertise in one of Spain’s most important industrial regions.

Expanding capabilities in strategic sectors

Founded in 1997, Coapsa Control has built its business around servicing cranes used in nuclear facilities and ports. Its activities include inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, modernisation projects and technical support. The company generates annual sales of approximately EUR 4 million and employs around 20 people.

Rather than expanding through a new greenfield operation, Konecranes has chosen to build on an established local business with long standing customer relationships. It is much like adding an experienced maintenance crew to an existing fleet instead of recruiting and training an entirely new team from the ground up.

The additional capabilities strengthen Konecranes’ ability to support critical lifting equipment where uptime and safety remain operational priorities.

Local expertise remains in place

According to owners Jordi Calatayud Castañ and Joan Quintana Canudas, joining Konecranes provides continuity for employees while creating opportunities to grow the business under a larger international organisation.

The owners said the entire team can continue its work while expanding future activities with confidence.

For customers, continuity is often as valuable as new investment. Experienced technicians who already understand site specific equipment can reduce disruption during inspections, maintenance programmes and equipment upgrades.

Stronger footprint across Spain

Catarina Lopez, Manager of Port Services at Konecranes, said the acquisition reinforces the company’s presence in Catalonia and throughout Spain while ensuring Coapsa’s specialised knowledge remains available to customers in the nuclear and port sectors.

Spain continues to invest in port infrastructure and industrial facilities that depend on reliable lifting equipment. Regular inspection programmes, preventive maintenance and equipment modernisation have become increasingly important as operators seek to maximise asset life while meeting safety and operational requirements.

The addition of the Viladecavalls location also strengthens Konecranes’ regional service network, allowing the company to respond more efficiently to customer requirements across northeastern Spain while supporting its broader industrial and port service activities.
