In the picturesque city of Angers, France, the iconic Saint-Maurice Cathedral is undergoing a significant renovation. The focus is on securing the roof of the nave, a task that has necessitated the use of a Liebherr MK 140 mobile construction crane. This crane has proven indispensable for the precise lifting operations required in the tightly packed historic town center.
The cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture completed around 1250, now finds itself enveloped in a protective umbrella structure as part of the restoration efforts that commenced in October 2023. This extensive renovation is set to continue for 14 months, with the umbrella-type protection serving to safeguard the 30-meter-high roof.

The protective screen for the cathedral’s roof comprises ten massive elements, each measuring 25 meters in length and weighing up to two tonnes. These elements were carefully lifted and assembled at a significant height using the MK 140 crane. Positioned deftly close to the cathedral, the crane’s compact design and maneuverability were critical in navigating the limited workspace of the historic city center.
Adekma, a French material handling and lifting company, executed the lifting operations under the commission of Entrepose. They strategically used the MK 140 crane’s features to ensure the project’s success. Operating at a distance of 42.5 meters with a hook height of up to 30 meters and jib positions of 30° and 45°, the crane’s maximum lifting capacities were fully utilized. The MK 140’s ability to cover the entire roof area from a single location, thanks to its boom length and maneuverability, significantly streamlined the process. Moreover, the height-adjustable operator’s cab provided optimal visibility, enhancing precision during the lifting operations.

Saint-Maurice Cathedral, renowned for its impressive dome vault soaring over 24 meters high and its intricate stained glass windows from the 12th to the 15th centuries, stands as a testament to France’s rich historical heritage. The building’s preservation is paramount, and the efforts undertaken by Adekma and their advanced crane technology underscore a commitment to maintaining this cultural landmark for future generations.

Adekma, based in Le Mans, northwest France, operates an impressive fleet of nine Liebherr mobile construction cranes across eight sites. Their fleet includes seven MK 88 cranes and one MK 140, the latter being the newest addition as of early 2024. The company’s extensive capabilities also feature 80 mobile cranes with capacities reaching up to 700 tonnes, demonstrating their robust expertise in handling large-scale lifting operations.
With the ongoing renovation of Saint-Maurice Cathedral, the blend of historical preservation and modern engineering solutions continues to captivate both locals and visitors, ensuring that this architectural gem remains a vibrant part of France’s cultural landscape.
