Maersk and Amazon’s ECO Delivery Deal Set to Slash Emissions

A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) and Amazon have recently inked a deal for the years 2023-2024. This agreement focuses on transporting a staggering 20,000 FFE containers using eco-friendly biofuel through Maersk’s revolutionary “ECO Delivery” ocean product offering.

This forward-looking pact is projected to lead to a substantial reduction of 44,600 metric tons of CO2e compared to standard bunker fuel. To put this into perspective, it’s akin to preventing the combustion of a whopping 50 million pounds of coal. What makes this especially remarkable is that this marks the fourth consecutive year that Amazon and Maersk have joined forces to facilitate container shipping with a keen eye on low greenhouse gas (GHG) fuel options.

Adam Baker, Vice President of Global Transportation at Amazon, expressed his pride in the partnership, stating, “We’re proud to collaborate with Maersk, a Climate Pledge signatory and leader in shipping logistics, on actionable solutions to decarbonize maritime shipping.”

Maersk’s ECO Delivery biofuel option stands out for its immediate and externally verified GHG savings for customers, without requiring compensatory measures such as offsetting. This year, Amazon stands to benefit from an exciting development within the ECO Delivery product. It will now utilize green methanol alongside bio-diesel as a second green fuel in the vessel fleet, further enhancing its environmental credentials.

What’s more, ECO Delivery employs primary data for fuel consumption, ensuring precise calculations of emissions savings, inclusive of various greenhouse gases besides CO2. Additionally, this new model provides price certainty and stability while unlinking itself from the volatile fossil fuel market.

Narin Phol, President North America at A.P. Moller – Maersk, noted, “As cosigners of the Climate Pledge, we must constantly create new opportunities to make this a decade of action. Decarbonizing shipping is one significant step that is to be combined with many others to protect our future.”

This ambitious collaboration is in line with the Climate Pledge, co-founded by Global Optimism and Amazon, which aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Signatories commit to measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions, implementing decarbonization strategies aligned with the Paris Agreement, and neutralizing remaining emissions with credible offsets.

With a shared commitment to sustainability, this partnership between Amazon and Maersk signifies a bold stride towards a greener and more sustainable future for maritime shipping. To learn more about their commitment to the environment.
