Maersk Celebrates Milestone with Delivery of First Large Dual-Fuel Methanol-Powered Container Vessel Series

A.P. Moller – Maersk has achieved a significant milestone in its decarbonization journey, completing the world’s first series of large dual-fuel methanol container vessels. The latest vessel, AXEL MÆRSK, was named and delivered at a ceremony marking the culmination of years of development and collaboration.

The 16,000-TEU AXEL MÆRSK is now on her maiden voyage, connecting Asia and Europe via Maersk’s East–West network. The vessel is the latest in Maersk’s fleet of methanol-powered ships, following the earlier delivery of the LAURA MÆRSK and other sister vessels. Each represents a step forward in the industry’s pursuit of a low-carbon future.

The ship’s godmother, Su Youn Ham, Mechanical Superintendent at Maersk, performed the traditional naming ceremony, blessing the vessel and her crew before departure. In keeping with Maersk tradition, the ship is named after Axel Poul Peder Maersk Uggla, grandson of Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation.

This milestone follows years of development, partnerships, and investment. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries built the series, and MAN Energy Solutions supplied the methanol-compatible engines. Industry partners and customers alike have supported Maersk’s strategy to decarbonize its fleet, demonstrating a growing commitment to reducing maritime emissions.

With the completion of this series, Maersk now operates 12 large dual-fuel methanol-powered vessels, marking a critical step toward its 2040 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal. The company plans to continue expanding its methanol-powered fleet, building on this foundation as part of a broader strategy to phase out fossil fuels in shipping.

Methanol has emerged as a leading alternative fuel in the shipping sector, offering a pathway to lower emissions when produced from renewable sources. However, challenges remain in scaling green methanol production to meet future demand. Maersk has acknowledged these challenges and is working with suppliers and governments to accelerate the availability of green fuels.

The delivery of AXEL MÆRSK sends a clear message: the shipping industry can act on its climate commitments with concrete steps, not just words. While the scale of transformation needed remains vast, projects like these show progress is possible when stakeholders align efforts across the value chain.

For now, the AXEL MÆRSK will continue her journey across global trade routes, transporting goods between Asia and Europe while showcasing what’s achievable in the quest for a net-zero future.
