MOL Coastal Shipping Launches Concept Study for Large Coastal Ammonia Carrier

MOL Coastal Shipping, Ltd., a subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), has announced its collaboration with Asahi Tanker Co., Ltd. and IKOUS Co., Ltd. to conduct a concept study for a large coastal ammonia carrier. This initiative aims to develop a sustainable vessel capable of meeting growing demand for ammonia transport while addressing environmental concerns and crew shortages in the maritime industry.

Ammonia, traditionally used as a fertilizer raw material, is gaining traction globally as a clean energy alternative due to its carbon-neutral combustion properties. Recognizing this potential, MOL Coastal Shipping seeks to introduce a single vessel solution for transporting significant quantities of ammonia, anticipating a surge in demand, particularly in Japan.

The current mode of transporting ammonia via coastal vessels with a capacity of approximately 1,000m³ presents logistical challenges and exacerbates the shortage of seafarers. In response, the introduction of large-scale coastal ammonia carriers, with a capacity of up to 10,000m³, is viewed as an economically efficient and practical solution.

The concept study will prioritize the development of a vessel that aligns with key sustainability principles, focusing on GHG reduction, versatility, and efficient cargo handling. Emphasis will also be placed on enhancing labor-saving measures, safety standards, and crew welfare. MOL will contribute technical expertise in labor-saving and safety, while Asahi Tanker will leverage its experience in operating coastal tankers, including next-generation electric vessels. IKOUS will provide specialized knowledge in ship management for ammonia carriers.

As part of the MOL Group, MOL Coastal Shipping is committed to facilitating ammonia supply chain initiatives by bridging ocean and coastal shipping. Furthermore, by embracing decarbonization efforts, the company aims to support the commercialization of environmentally friendly energy resources, contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
