Ocean Network Express Bolsters Sustainable Fleet with New Methanol-Ready Vessel ‘ONE Singapore’

Ocean Network Express (ONE) has added a new environmentally-ready vessel to its growing fleet, as the newly built ‘ONE Singapore’ was officially named during a ceremony at the Hiroshima Shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan.

The 13,900 TEU container vessel is the sixth in a fleet expansion program of 20 next-generation ships designed to be methanol and ammonia fuel ready. The naming of ONE Singapore on June 17, 2025, underscores ONE’s continued commitment to greener, more sustainable maritime transport, while also strengthening its operational capacity across major trade lanes.

With this milestone, ONE maintains momentum in its long-term fleet strategy—aimed at reducing emissions while adapting to the global push for cleaner fuels. These vessels are being built to future-proof the carrier’s fleet for the expected shift toward alternative fuel sources.

Jeremy Nixon, CEO of ONE, emphasized the significance of the ship’s name and its ties to the company’s roots: “Today’s naming of ONE Singapore signifies further progress in our fleet expansion strategy. This vessel, carrying the name of our global headquarters city, symbolizes our strong connection to Singapore’s vibrant maritime ecosystem.”

The addition of ONE Singapore closely follows the earlier deployment of ONE Sparkle, the first owned newbuild in this series. Several other sister ships have already been successfully integrated into the network. These vessels will primarily serve long-haul Asia-Europe and transpacific routes, where demand for sustainable and reliable shipping services continues to rise.

At nearly 14,000 TEU capacity, ONE Singapore is equipped with the infrastructure necessary to accommodate the use of alternative fuels when these become viable on a commercial scale. Her design aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization objectives, offering operational flexibility and reduced carbon intensity.

The ship is classed by Lloyd’s Register and flies the Singapore flag, further reinforcing the city-state’s growing stature as a global maritime hub. Singapore’s maritime ecosystem has become central to ONE’s global strategy since the company established its headquarters there in 2017. Today, it serves as the command center for ONE’s extensive worldwide operations.

The broader fleet enhancement initiative marks a pivotal shift in global container shipping, as more carriers race to adapt to stricter emissions regulations and future fuel mandates. By choosing dual-ready designs, ONE positions itself among the leading ocean carriers preparing for the transition to non-fossil propulsion systems.

With this latest addition, ONE strengthens both its sustainability credentials and its operational resilience. The deployment of ONE Singapore is expected to enhance service stability and network capacity on key routes between Asia, Europe, and North America.

The vessel is part of a wider movement within the liner shipping industry, which is gradually moving away from conventional fuel dependencies. While large-scale adoption of methanol or ammonia as marine fuels still faces hurdles—such as infrastructure, supply chain logistics, and pricing—carriers like ONE are laying the groundwork now.

The integration of ONE Singapore brings the total number of newly constructed vessels in this initiative to six, with fourteen more currently under construction and scheduled for phased delivery through 2027.
