Plaquemines Port and APM Terminals Forge $500 Million Partnership for Cutting-edge Container Terminal

Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District (Plaquemines Port) has entered into a strategic partnership with APM Terminals to construct a state-of-the-art container terminal on the West Bank of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, United States.

Advancing Maritime Frontiers

APM Terminals, a global leader in logistics services, is set to leverage its expertise as one of the largest terminal operators worldwide in this collaboration. The move comes as a testament to the market’s confidence in Louisiana, showcasing the state as a hub for vibrant and growing port activities.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed his support, underlining the significance of APM Terminals’ commitment as a direct investment into the state’s businesses and industries. He anticipates a substantial impact on job growth and the economy, reinforcing Louisiana’s pivotal role in global trade.

Strategic Location Unleashes Potential

The new terminal, strategically positioned on the West Bank of Plaquemines Parish, boasts a prime location closest to the mouth of the Mississippi River. This advantageous placement provides a three-hour round trip advantage over the nearest proposed terminal and features the widest ship turning radius.

Under a 30-year lease agreement with extension options, Plaquemines Port will lease the land to APM Terminals for the development. The initial investment in terminal infrastructure is estimated to be approximately $500 million, entirely funded by APM Terminals.

Cutting-edge Infrastructure and Expansion Plans

The initial phase will cover 200 acres, on-dock rail facilities, and a berth capable of accommodating the largest ships navigating the expanded Panama Canal, with a capacity of 14,000 TEU. The site has the potential for expansion up to 900 acres for terminal growth and complementary logistics activities.

Wim Lagaay, APM Terminals’ Senior Investment Advisor, envisions the site evolving into a major U.S. ship gateway. He highlighted the opportunity to integrate cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices, elevating safety, efficiency, and productivity standards.

Local Endorsement and Transformative Impact

Charles D. Tillotson, Executive Director of the Plaquemines Port, emphasized the project’s transformative impact, declaring it as “The Louisiana Gateway Port” due to its overwhelming geographic and strategic advantages.

Port Commission Chairman Brian Champagne hailed the development agreement as a testament to APM Terminals’ confidence in Plaquemines’ key advantages. The community and parish stand united and excited about this transformative project, solidifying Louisiana as the Gulf’s leading entryway to America.

In conclusion, the Plaquemines Port and APM Terminals partnership signifies a substantial leap forward in maritime infrastructure, promising not only economic growth for Louisiana but also setting new industry standards in the realm of logistics and trade.
