SAL has launched the new SAL Atlantic Service, a semi liner operation linking Europe, the Americas and Africa with regular sailings aimed at breakbulk, heavy lift and project cargo customers.
New route targets project cargo demand
The service will operate with five shallow draft multipurpose vessels equipped with cranes capable of lifting up to 500 tonnes. SAL said the operation is designed to combine the flexibility often associated with tramp shipping with the predictability of scheduled liner services.
At least two sailings per month are planned. For cargo owners moving oversized equipment or industrial components, that schedule can make the difference between waiting weeks for tonnage or keeping a project on track. In project logistics, timing often matters as much as transport capacity itself.

The service is marketed through the global JSI Alliance sales network, giving customers access to local commercial support across multiple regions.
Service named after Svend Andersen
The Atlantic connection will also carry the name “Svend Andersen Service” in memory of shipping executive Svend Andersen, whose original concept helped shape the new operation.
The service has already commenced operations with the vessels MV Svend and MV Industrial Song.
Jens Baumgarten, Commercial Director at JSI Alliance, said the new service reflects changing global trade patterns and growing demand for reliable transport solutions across Atlantic trade lanes.
“Cargoes that keep industries and projects moving across the world” remain central to the alliance’s strategy, Baumgarten said.
