Samskip Leads the Way Towards a Sustainable Supply Chain

Samskip, a leading multimodal logistics provider, continues its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering sustainability across the supply chain. With a focus on innovative solutions and collaboration, Samskip aims to create a cleaner future for logistics.

Pedro Vasconcellos, Head of Sustainability at Samskip, emphasizes the company’s dedication to ongoing improvement. “We’re constantly seeking pioneering changes that have a lasting impact. By working together with like-minded partners, we can achieve meaningful progress,” Vasconcellos states.

One key aspect of Samskip’s sustainability efforts is collaboration across the supply chain. Erik Hofmeester, Head of Vessel Management, highlights ongoing dialogues with hydrogen and fuel cell suppliers. Hofmeester advocates for a level playing field in emissions regulations, emphasizing the importance of charging CO2 emissions across all modes of transport to encourage a shift towards greener alternatives.

Despite regulatory challenges, Samskip has already made substantial investments in cleaner technology. The company’s ambition to achieve ‘net zero’ emissions by 2040 surpasses current requirements. Hofmeester notes that Samskip has reduced CO2 emissions by 10.4% compared to the 2020 baseline, with initiatives such as biofuel-powered ships leading the way.

“Samskip is committed to offering environmentally friendly solutions to our customers,” Vasconcellos affirms. The company’s focus extends beyond maritime transport to include inland barge modes, road transport, and rail lines. Recognition, such as the EcoVadis Gold medal, further validates Samskip’s sustainability efforts.

Looking ahead, Samskip plans to expand its fleet of biofuel-powered ships and explore alternative fuel options such as methanol and hydrogen. The introduction of hydrogen-powered vessels, known as Samskip Seashuttles, represents a significant milestone in the company’s green journey.

Partnerships play a crucial role in Samskip’s sustainability initiatives. Collaboration with port authorities, such as the Port of Rotterdam and Port of Oslo, facilitates the development of shore infrastructure for hydrogen bunkering and shore power. Standardization efforts ensure seamless integration of cleaner technologies across the industry.

While challenges remain, including the availability and affordability of biofuels and hydrogen, Samskip remains optimistic about the future of sustainable logistics. “The energy we save is as important as the energy we use,” emphasizes Hofmeester. With growing customer interest in cleaner transport options, Samskip remains committed to driving innovation and leading the way towards a greener supply chain.
