Sarens Sets Record with 5000T Concrete Culvert Installation for West Coast Mainline Bridge

Sarens, collaborating with client Story Contracting, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in the construction industry. The successful transportation and installation of a massive 4950-tonne concrete culvert for the construction of a new railway bridge at Ravenscraig, along the West Coast Mainline (WCML), showcases unparalleled innovation and dedication to project excellence.

Sarens, renowned for its expertise in heavy lifting and transport solutions, employed a fleet of cutting-edge equipment for this project. The deployment included 168 axle-lines of K24 SPMT and eight PPUs, intricately choreographed to transport and position the colossal structure with unmatched precision. The use of Sarens’ in-house designed BS610 tower system steelwork not only ensured the secure transport of the culvert but also facilitated its seamless installation.

Executing this complex operation over the Easter weekend, the Sarens team worked diligently for nine days to maneuver the 5,000-tonne bridge into its designated location. This installation, deemed the largest of its kind in Europe, marks a historic moment for both Sarens and Story Contracting. Not only have they met expectations, but they have also surpassed them, setting unprecedented standards for excellence in the transportation and installation of large-scale infrastructure.

The success of this venture underscores the significance of collaboration between engineering marvels and project management expertise. Sarens and Story Contracting’s ability to orchestrate such a massive operation with precision highlights their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is achievable in the realm of heavy construction and logistics.

This monumental achievement not only solidifies Sarens’ position as a global leader in heavy lifting solutions but also establishes a new benchmark for the industry. As the transportation and installation of infrastructure continue to evolve, Sarens and its partners are at the forefront, redefining the possibilities of what can be accomplished in the world of construction and logistics.
