Terntank Expands Its Fleet: Order Placed for Next-Generation Wind/Methanol-Ready Tanker

Terntank, the Danish-based maritime company renowned for its commitment to environmental sustainability, has once again set sail towards pioneering advancements in clean shipping technologies. In a recent announcement, Terntank revealed its order placement for 1+1 next-generation oil and chemical tankers, equipped with wind-assisted propulsion and dual-fuel engines capable of operating on various sustainable fuels including MGO, biofuels, and methanol. The delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

The 15,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) vessel will boast innovative features such as the Hybrid Solution Plus®, incorporating a methanol-powered engine, wind-assisted propulsion, a hybrid battery system, and on-shore power. These features signify a leap towards achieving cleaner and more efficient shipping operations.

Owners of Terntank, Tryggve, Rigmor, Annika, and John, expressed their enthusiasm regarding this new order, reinforcing the company’s position as a leader in sustainable shipping practices. The decision aligns with Terntank’s overarching goal of driving positive change within the maritime industry.

This recent investment follows Terntank’s earlier announcements of three similar dual-fuel tankers, currently under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, Yangzhou. These vessels, designed by Kongsberg, represent a significant milestone in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, consistent with Terntank’s longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility.

Drawing insights from their existing CMJL SERIES vessels, Terntank anticipates further reductions in CO2 emissions with this new addition, bringing them closer to their net-zero ambition. The vessel’s 14-segregation design optimizes transportation of bio feedstock and finished goods, supporting both environmental objectives and customer sustainability goals.

Crucially, the new tanker is capable of operating on advanced low Global Warming Potential (GWP) fuels such as green methanol and e-methanol, playing a pivotal role in Terntank’s roadmap towards achieving zero emissions by 2040.

Terntank’s commitment extends beyond environmental stewardship to ensuring high standards for crew work environments, emphasizing safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Established in 1958, Terntank has solidified its reputation as a family-owned shipping company prioritizing safety, sustainability, and employee welfare. The company’s latest order underscores its unwavering dedication to driving innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.
