Testing Underway for Digital Sea and Inland Port Networking

In a significant development for the maritime and logistics sector, platform operators Portbase and RheinPorts have embarked on a pioneering project aimed at digitally connecting the maritime and inland port community. This collaboration seeks to streamline the flow of data between the seaports in the Netherlands and the inland ports along the Rhine, with the support of key stakeholders such as the Port of Rotterdam, duisport, and the Port of Switzerland.

The integration of the Portbase Port Community System (PCS) with the RheinPorts RPIS (RiverPorts Planning and Information System) is poised to revolutionize efficiency and transparency throughout supply chains, from seaport to hinterland. By enabling seamless data exchange, the initiative promises to enhance import and export processes, optimize planning, and simplify information transfer among stakeholders, thereby reducing complexity along logistics chains and creating value for carriers, terminals, ports, and other partners.

This endeavor marks the practical realization of a memorandum of understanding signed between the ports in 2022, reflecting a concerted effort to leverage digital solutions for port operations and management. Beyond the collaboration between ports and platform operators, active participation from logistics players along supply chains is essential. Companies like Danser Group are pivotal partners in the ongoing test phase, contributing to data exchange initiatives and laying the groundwork for future use cases based on accumulated experience.

At its core, the project aims to establish a digital corridor facilitating seamless and secure data transmission, thereby streamlining operations and bolstering efficiency for both inland shipping and port activities. The envisioned benefits extend to importers, exporters, terminal operators, carriers, port authorities, and customs officials alike, underscoring the widespread advantages of embracing digitalization in port logistics.

Central to the initiative’s success is the active involvement and collaboration of the port community. With a clear emphasis on delivering tangible benefits expeditiously, the test phase is slated for completion by the end of 2024, paving the way for a ramp-up phase in 2025. Through collective efforts, the stakeholders aspire to establish a robust digital corridor between inland and seaports, thereby charting a transformative course for the future of port logistics.
