Van Oord’s Heavy Lift Vessel Svanen Receives Major Upgrade

Van Oord’s heavy lift installation vessel, Svanen, has undergone a remarkable transformation, solidifying its position as a key player in the offshore wind energy sector. In a swift and intricate operation, a towering A-framed gantry extension, weighing an impressive 1,200 tonnes, was seamlessly installed atop the vessel, elevating its total height to an impressive 125 meters. This upgrade marks a significant milestone, making the Svanen one of the largest heavy-lift vessels globally.

The intricate extension was meticulously constructed by Holland Shipyard, showcasing their prowess in engineering and steel fabrication. Mammoet Schiedam, utilizing one of the world’s largest cranes, facilitated the precise installation of this colossal structure. Alongside the gantry extension, the vessel underwent a comprehensive modernization, including upgrades to lifting hooks, enhancing the lifting capacity from 3,000 to 4,500 tonnes. Additionally, improvements were made to the gripper mechanism to accommodate increased loads, and structural modifications were implemented to integrate the latest hammer size. The enhanced Svanen is slated to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2024.

The timing of this upgrade aligns with the escalating demand for renewable energy solutions, particularly within the burgeoning offshore wind sector. As wind turbine technology evolves, with turbines growing larger and more powerful, the Svanen’s enhancement positions it to tackle the challenges of installing next-generation monopile foundations for offshore wind projects effectively.

Marco Hoogendoorn, Commercial Director at Holland Shipyards, expressed immense pride in the successful completion of this monumental project, emphasizing the exceptional precision and collaborative efforts that underpinned its realization. He underscored the significance of this upgrade in advancing the capabilities of the Svanen and its pivotal role in shaping the future of renewable energy and offshore wind endeavors.

Maarten Loman, Project Manager overseeing the Svanen modification at Van Oord, echoed sentiments of pride and dedication, emphasizing the vessel’s evolving role in the energy transition. From its origins in bridge construction to its pivotal contribution to offshore wind installation, the Svanen’s continuous enhancements underscore its adaptability and relevance in facilitating sustainable energy initiatives.
