Vessel Successfully Freed, Navigation Resumes on IJssel River

In a swift response to a morning incident, a inland tanker that grounded in the floodplains of the IJssel, near Arnhem, has been successfully dislodged and is currently being towed to Nijmegen as of the early evening. The incident led to a temporary closure of the waterway, causing a backlog of approximately twenty vessels by the early evening. Fortunately, the IJssel has now been reopened to maritime traffic.

The tanker, which became stranded at the IJsselkop near Westervoort, precisely where the river diverges from the Nederrijn, prompted concerns among ship operators. The specific details of the incident remain unclear, and it is uncertain whether the high water levels played a role. The area affected, characterized by a substantial water surface instead of a meandering river, requires vessels to stay within the designated navigational channel. A spokesperson from Rijkswaterstaat emphasized the importance of caution in navigating through the marked areas with current conditions.

Adding to the challenges faced by maritime traffic, the closure of the Oranjesluizen near Amsterdam due to elevated water levels in the Markermeer further restricts alternative routes. As of Wednesday evening, the Oranjesluizen have been out of operation, and there is no confirmation on when regular operations will resume.

Last week, a similar incident occurred when another inland vessel became stranded in a flooded field adjacent to the IJssel, situated between Rheden and Lathum. The vessel, for unknown reasons, veered off the designated navigation channel around 1:00 PM. Within two hours, two other inland vessels successfully towed the stranded ship back into navigable waters.

The recent occurrences underscore the complexities and challenges faced by maritime traffic, particularly in regions prone to water-level fluctuations and unforeseen navigational hazards. Ship operators are urged to stay informed about water conditions, adhere to navigational guidelines, and exercise caution in challenging environments.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of maritime activities and the need for continuous vigilance in the dynamic waterway environment. As the vessel is being towed to Nijmegen, authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the root cause of the grounding.
