NYK Commences Long-Term Biofuel Test on Large Crude Oil Tanker

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) initiated a groundbreaking long-term biofuel test run on its very large crude oil tanker (VLCC) named Tenjun. The vessel, which received an initial supply of biofuel in Singapore, is set to operate using biofuel for approximately three months. This trial aims to thoroughly verify the safe and stable procurement of biofuel for extended use, marking a significant step in NYK’s efforts to decarbonize marine transportation.

NYK has previously conducted numerous short- and long-term safety trials of biofuel on various types of vessels, including bulk carriers, car carriers, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers. However, this is the first time an NYK-operated VLCC has embarked on a long-term biofuel trial. Biofuels, derived from organic resources like agricultural residues and waste cooking oil, are considered to have virtually zero carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions when combusted. This makes them a promising alternative for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the transition from heavy oil to zero-emission fuels.

The Tenjun, built in 2008 by IHI Marine United Shipbuilding Corporation, measures 330 meters in length and 60 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 159,927 tons and a deadweight tonnage of 302,108 tons. This substantial vessel is now part of NYK’s innovative approach to sustainable shipping practices.

This biofuel initiative aligns with NYK Group’s medium-term management plan, “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing,” released on March 10, 2023. This plan underscores NYK’s commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, aiming to bring value to life and co-create the necessary value for the future. The 2030 corporate vision pushes NYK to advance its core business while growing new ventures, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

Under the “Sail GREEN” brand, NYK focuses on reducing GHG emissions through the transportation of goods. This brand initiative highlights NYK’s dedication to contributing to eco-friendly supply chains for its customers, regardless of the transport mode, whether by sea, land, or through terminals. This trial on the Tenjun is a testament to NYK’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and innovation within the shipping industry.

Biofuels, refined through the methyl esterification of vegetable oils, are gaining traction as a viable alternative to petroleum-derived heavy oil and light oil. Despite emitting CO₂ during combustion, the lifecycle of biofuels is considered carbon neutral because the CO₂ emitted is offset by the CO₂ absorbed by the plants used to produce the biomass.

As NYK continues to explore and implement sustainable fuel options, this long-term biofuel test run on the Tenjun could pave the way for broader adoption of biofuels in large-scale shipping. This initiative not only supports NYK’s environmental goals but also contributes to the global push towards greener and more sustainable maritime practices.
