AGL Ports and Terminals Secures €100 Million Investment for Lobito Port Expansion

Maritime and logistics development, AGL Ports and Terminals, led by Managing Director Olivier De Noray, has officially signed a concession contract with Celso Rosas, Chairman of Lobito Port. The agreement, inked on December 11, 2023, pertains to the multipurpose terminal, inclusive of containers, at the strategically positioned Port of Lobito. The signing was witnessed by Joao Fenandes, Chairman of the Commission, Pedro Maza, Legal Manager of the Angolan Ministry Transport and Lidia Amaro, Vice Governor of Benguela Province.

Boosting Connectivity and Trade

AGL Ports and Terminals, a key player in Africa’s multimodal logistics sector, is set to invest a substantial €100 million to revolutionize the Port of Lobito. The primary goal is to transform it into a modern, efficient, and globally competitive port platform. This endeavor aligns with the outcomes of the international call for tenders held in October, which resulted in AGL winning the bid for the Lobito Port terminals.

The Managing Director, Olivier De Noray, highlighted the pivotal role of AGL’s partnership with the world’s leading shipowner, MSC. The collaboration aims to enhance the connectivity of the Lobito port platform, stimulating regional trade and supporting industrialization efforts. De Noray stated, “The Port of Lobito will be involved in the development of agricultural projects, construction sites, and tertiary service companies.”

Port Infrastructure and Strategic Positioning

With a deep quay measuring 14 meters and direct sea access, the Port of Lobito is poised to accommodate large-capacity vessels, establishing itself as Angola’s second-largest port. This strategic development is anticipated to improve the living conditions of over 35 million Angolans and neighboring populations.

Furthermore, the Port of Lobito is strategically positioned as the first Atlantic gateway to the Copperbelt region, playing a crucial role in the global energy transition. The port’s infrastructure is expected to facilitate the transport of strategic minerals such as copper and cobalt to international markets.

AGL’s Commitment and Vision

AGL, Africa’s benchmark multimodal logistics operator, demonstrates its commitment to Africa’s development through tailored, innovative global logistics solutions. Recently integrated into the MSC Group, a prominent shipping and logistics company, AGL boasts a century-long legacy of expertise. The company’s expansive network includes 250 logistics and maritime agencies, 22 port and rail concessions, 66 dry docks, and two river terminals, with a global team of over 21,000 employees.

As part of the concession agreement, effective from the 1st quarter of 2024, AGL will take over the staff of Empresa Portuária do Lobito EP port authority. A comprehensive plan is set to be implemented, focusing on skill development for employees and fostering the growth of local subcontractors. This initiative aims to ensure that the Port of Lobito offers services compliant with international standards.

In summary, the signing of the concession contract marks a crucial milestone for AGL Ports and Terminals, Lobito Port, and the broader maritime and logistics landscape in Africa. The investment and strategic developments underscore the region’s growing significance in global trade and logistics, aligning with AGL’s vision to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s sustainable development.
