Anglo American Welcomes Arrival of Final LNG Dual-Fuelled Ship

Anglo American PLC proudly announces the acquisition of its tenth and final dual-fuelled bulk carrier, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This milestone, unveiled on Wednesday, marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices. The capesize-plus LNG dual-fuelled bulk carriers, constructed over the past three years, represent a strategic investment in eco-friendly maritime solutions.

The newly acquired vessel, named Ubuntu Liberty, is poised for its maiden voyage from China to Saldanha Bay, where it will embark on collecting premium grade iron ore. Matt Walker, CEO of Anglo American’s marketing business, underscores the pivotal role of this cutting-edge fleet in minimizing the company’s environmental impact. He highlights, “Anglo American is the charterer of the world’s largest LNG dual-fuelled capesize-plus fleet, a testament to our dedication to sustainability.”

By leveraging LNG technology, Anglo American anticipates a substantial reduction in emissions, estimating a 35% decrease compared to conventional marine fuel-powered ships. This proactive approach aligns with the company’s broader sustainability objectives. With ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations by 2040, Anglo American reaffirms its position as an industry leader in embracing environmentally conscious practices.

As the maritime sector continues to navigate towards greener horizons, Anglo American sets a precedent for responsible corporate stewardship. The adoption of LNG dual-fuelled vessels not only underscores the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability but also showcases the viability of innovative solutions in shaping the future of shipping.
