Azane Fuel Solutions and Amogy Collaborate to Develop Ammonia-Powered Bunker Vessel

Azane Fuel Solutions, the Norwegian pioneer in ammonia bunkering, and Amogy Inc, renowned for its cutting-edge ammonia-to-power technology, have joined forces. The collaboration, announced at the Argus Clean Ammonia Europe Conference, unveils the launch of a revolutionary ammonia bunker vessel design, with the shared goal of incorporating a zero-emissions power system.

Azane Fuel Solutions, known for developing the world’s first ammonia bunkering terminal, has already devised an ammonia fuel bunker vessel concept featuring an advanced cargo handling system. To propel this vessel towards carbon neutrality, the company has partnered with Amogy, aiming to integrate Amogy’s ammonia-to-power system seamlessly. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two entities signifies their commitment to exploring the technical and commercial feasibility of this ambitious project.

The collaboration extends beyond the vessel itself, as Azane and Amogy plan to investigate the integration of an Azane ammonia fuel feeder solution into the Amogy power system. This holistic approach seeks to create a comprehensive, carbon-free propulsion solution for the seagoing vessels and, ultimately, the deep-sea segment.

Håkon Skjerstad, CEO of Azane Fuel Solutions, emphasizes the strategic importance of this collaboration in the journey towards decarbonizing the shipping industry. He states, “Because of this, we need a zero-emission solution to provide propulsion to our vessels. Amogy has a promising technology that can help us reach our strategic ambition of offering zero-emission bunker solutions for deep-sea shipping.”

Amogy’s ammonia-to-power solution holds the promise of decarbonizing challenging sectors such as shipping, power generation, and heavy-duty transportation. By integrating Amogy’s technology, the new bunker vessel aspires to achieve zero-emissions without compromising operational and safety requirements, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable maritime practices.

Christian W. Berg, Managing Director of Amogy Norway, expresses excitement about the collaboration, stating, “By using our technology, Azane Fuel Solutions can deliver clean ammonia to ships globally with zero emissions from the bunkering operation. This will be a first of its kind for this segment.”

The collaboration between Azane Fuel Solutions and Amogy will involve a thorough exploration of the compatibility of their respective technologies and the commercial potential of the combined solutions. The ultimate goal is to progress towards a pilot project that will further mature the bunker vessel with the ammonia-to-power solution for widespread commercial applications.

This strategic partnership aligns with Azane’s larger vision of offering innovative technologies for bunkering terminals, cargo handling systems, and other ammonia fuel handling systems. The company’s collaboration with Yara Clean Ammonia is set to kickstart the world’s first ammonia bunkering network in 2024, with operations expected to commence in 2025.

As the maritime industry continues to navigate the complexities of decarbonization, the Azane-Amogy collaboration emerges as a beacon of hope, showcasing the potential of ammonia as a carbon-free, safe, and reliable fuel for the shipping industry.
