Bolloré Logistics Launches “SEAalternative” for Greener Maritime Transport

In response to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) regulations aiming for a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions from maritime freight by 2050 compared to 2008, Bolloré Logistics has unveiled its initiative – “SEAalternative.” This innovative offering seeks to diminish the carbon footprint of maritime transport through the utilization of biofuels, a key strategy in meeting the ambitious emission reduction goals.

Previously exclusive to two specific shipping companies, SEAalternative is now accessible across all commercial routes and maritime carriers, catering to both one-time shipments and contractual agreements. The offering ensures an impressive 84% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional transportation, aligning with the physical limit guidelines set forth by the Smart Freight Center. Notably, SEAalternative employs biofuel derived from used cooking oil, distinctly avoiding the use of palm oil.

The SEAalternative solution is built on a comprehensive end-to-end process that is both integrated and verified. Bolloré Logistics attributes the environmental benefits of biofuels to client shipments based on individual requirements, providing quarterly statements. Carbon savings are meticulously outlined in the client’s CO2e dashboard and subjected to annual third-party audits.

Part of Bolloré Logistics’ “Powering Sustainable Logistics” Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, inaugurated in 2018, SEAalternative represents a commitment to offering eco-friendly supply chain solutions to clients. Aligned with newly validated emission reduction targets by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Bolloré Logistics aims to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 22% from Scope 3 – encompassing transportation and downstream distribution – by 2030 compared to 2022. The company actively encourages its clients to embrace sustainability in their business operations, as emphasized by Odile Maarek, Director of CSR, Organization, and Methods at Bolloré Logistics.

In light of increasing environmental concerns, Bolloré Logistics positions SEAalternative as a proactive step towards greener logistics, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change. As the maritime industry faces growing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, Bolloré Logistics sets a noteworthy precedent with SEAalternative, emphasizing the importance of environmentally conscious choices in the realm of maritime and logistics.
