Wind-assisted propulsion expert BAR Technologies has inked a significant deal with Nervion Naval Offshore, renowned for its expertise in floating offshore wind platforms. The collaboration introduces BAR Technologies’ innovative WindWings technology to the European market, representing the company’s initial manufacturing venture outside China.
Nervion Naval Offshore, a subsidiary of the Amper Group with establishments in Ferrol and As Somozas, Spain, will act as the local supplier for WindWings in Europe. This strategic alliance emerges in response to evolving EU emissions guidelines and the increasing demand for cost-effective auxiliary wind propulsion solutions.
In this partnership, Nervion will spearhead the procurement and construction of WindWings, overseeing their installation across European shipyards. The rigid sails, composed of steel and composite-glass, are meticulously designed to enhance fuel efficiency and curtail emissions. Notably, BAR Technologies has previously collaborated with industry giants like dry bulk shipowner Berge Bulk and Cargill, the world’s largest charterer of dry bulk ships. Additionally, it has joined forces with Yara Marine Technologies to promote the technology globally.
Nervion’s responsibilities extend to the ongoing servicing of WindWings during their operational lifespan, along with conducting training sessions for vessel crews on effectively operating these innovative wing sails. Simultaneously, BAR Technologies, headquartered in the UK, retains the role of driving innovation and introducing new WindWings® variants.
John Cooper, CEO at BAR Technologies, highlights the significance of establishing a European supplier for WindWings®, emphasizing its potential to boost global sales. As vessel owners increasingly explore wind propulsion to align with EU regulations, this collaboration positions BAR Technologies for substantial growth.
Roberto Bouzas, General Manager of Nervion Naval Offshore, underscores the impact of environmental regulations, such as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, on catalyzing transformative shifts in the shipping industry. Drawing on their manufacturing experience in the wind energy sector, Nervion is enthusiastic about supporting BAR Technologies in ushering in new WindWings® installations, contributing to the global shipping industry’s journey towards decarbonization.
This alliance with Nervion complements BAR’s existing partnership with China Merchants (CMET), which focuses on sales and manufacturing activities in Asia.
