Cathay Airways Sets Ambitious Carbon Intensity Target for 2030

Cathay Airways has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to environmental sustainability by announcing a new target to reduce its carbon intensity by 12% from 2019 levels by the year 2030. This ambitious goal is aligned with Cathay’s overarching aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, showcasing the airline’s dedication to leading the way in sustainable aviation practices.

The focus of this near-term target is to decrease carbon emissions from Cathay’s jet fuel use per revenue tonne kilometre (RTK) from 761 gCO2/RTK to 670 gCO2/RTK. To achieve this, Cathay plans to introduce more than 70 new passenger and freighter aircraft to its fleet, boasting up to 25% greater fuel efficiency compared to previous models. These efforts reflect Cathay’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and driving operational improvements to reduce its carbon footprint.

A key strategy in achieving its carbon intensity target is the accelerated adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Cathay has pledged to offset 10% of carbon emissions from employee duty travel on Cathay Pacific flights starting from 2024, further demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices. This initiative builds upon Cathay’s existing efforts, such as its voluntary carbon offset program, Fly Greener, which has been in place since 2007.

Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer of Cathay Airways, emphasized the airline’s determination to continually improve its climate performance. He highlighted the importance of accelerating the use of SAF, alongside fleet modernization and operational enhancements, in driving progress towards long-term sustainability goals.

Cathay Airways recognizes the challenges associated with transitioning to sustainable energy in aviation and has adopted a collaborative approach, known as Greener Together. This ethos encourages stakeholders to join forces in pursuit of environmental objectives. Cathay has actively forged strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations and stakeholders across the SAF value chain, including the establishment of Asia’s first major Corporate SAF Programme and the Hong Kong Sustainable Aviation Fuel Coalition.

With these initiatives, Cathay Airways reaffirms its position as a sustainability leader in the aviation industry, setting a precedent for other airlines in the region and beyond. By embracing innovation and collaboration, Cathay is driving positive change towards a more sustainable future for air travel.
