DEME’s ‘Orion’ Returns to the United States for Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project

Excitement brews in the maritime industry as DEME’s offshore installation vessel, ‘Orion,’ makes its triumphant return to the United States for Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project. Following its successful stint at the Moray West wind farm in Scotland, where it installed 29 monopiles, ‘Orion’ embarks on its next mission at the Port of Norfolk, Virginia.

At the heart of this endeavor lies DEME’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The installation of 176 monopile foundations, each weighing about 1,500 tonnes, signifies a monumental step towards harnessing clean energy for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Leveraging cutting-edge technology and expertise, DEME aims to deliver efficient and reliable solutions for CVOW, contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by up to 5 million tons annually.

The mobilization of ‘Orion’ marks the beginning of a comprehensive scope of work that DEME will undertake alongside its partners. From installing transition pieces to offshore substations, scour protection, and laying export and inter-array cables in collaboration with Prysmian, DEME is poised to execute a multifaceted project that promises to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape.

As DEME collaborates closely with Dominion Energy and other stakeholders, the focus remains on ensuring safety and efficiency throughout the project’s lifecycle. With a shared commitment to delivering clean energy to over 660,000 households in Virginia, this partnership underscores the collective effort towards a sustainable future.

The participation of skilled American Pile Drivers further strengthens the project team, reflecting DEME’s dedication to fostering local talent and expertise. Together, they form a cohesive unit ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by the CVOW project.

With ‘Orion’ leading the charge, DEME is poised to make significant strides in advancing offshore wind capabilities in the United States. As the project unfolds, all eyes are on the Port of Norfolk, where the next chapter in clean energy innovation is set to unfold.
