DP World Implements Green Revolution at London Gateway with HVO Transition

DP World London Gateway has replaced fossil diesel with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for its equipment and installations. This strategic shift is projected to slash carbon emissions by a substantial 8,300 tonnes this year, equivalent to the annual output of over 4,700 family cars.

The pivotal transition, initiated at the onset of January, underscores London Gateway’s commitment to eco-friendly practices. Last year witnessed significant strides in the port’s sustainability journey, marked by increased electrification and the adoption of carbon-efficient energy sources.

HVO, a renewable biodiesel sourced from sustainable origins, now powers diesel-engine equipment and installations across the London Gateway. DP World plans to sustain the use of HVO throughout 2024, anticipating a remarkable 26% net reduction in the company’s overall carbon emissions from its fleet and installations by the year’s end.

This green initiative follows DP World Southampton’s successful switch to HVO 18 months ago, resulting in a remarkable 90% reduction in carbon emissions. The London Gateway’s commitment to sustainability will receive an added boost with the imminent opening of the £350 million fourth berth this summer. This latest addition will be operated by eight cutting-edge fully electric straddle carriers, forming the world’s first all-electric fleet in commercial port operations.

Ahsan Agha, Vice President of Port Operations at DP World London Gateway, emphasized the strategic significance of this shift, stating, “Transitioning from fossil diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) across our operations is critical to meeting our customer’s supply chain demands. The move demonstrates not only our goal of becoming a net zero carbon organization by 2050 but also highlights our commitment to our customer’s sustainability success as well as our own.”

This eco-conscious move aligns with DP World’s broader global strategy, operating in 78 countries and handling 10% of world trade. The company’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the UK, integrating logistics, forwarding, and European transport capabilities into its comprehensive global network.

In a world striving for environmental harmony, DP World’s embrace of HVO at London Gateway sets a significant precedent, showcasing a potent blend of innovation, commitment, and responsibility in the maritime and logistics industry.
