Energy Transition Infrastructure Progresses in Port of Rotterdam

The Port of Rotterdam is forging ahead with its energy transition infrastructure, according to Maike Akkers, Energy Transition Infrastructure Program Manager at the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Despite challenges, progress is evident in untangling the complex web of cables and pipes crucial for the transition.

In an interview, Akkers highlighted the necessity of suitable infrastructure within and outside the port, emphasizing the significant work required, particularly below ground. Despite facing grid congestion issues last summer, progress remains on track for transporting and storing hydrogen and CO2 at the port.

The pace of energy transition development has accelerated in recent years, with challenges such as opposition and high costs surfacing. Akkers stresses the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to identify and overcome hurdles, underscoring the Port Authority’s role as a connecting link.

Notable achievements include a successful hydrogen pilot with the Port of Duisburg, demonstrating the feasibility of hydrogen transportation. However, scaling up remains a challenge, necessitating certainty across the entire value chain, with government policy playing a crucial role.

Digitalization emerges as a solution to grid congestion, with initiatives like the Starlings project optimizing electricity usage among neighboring companies. Looking ahead, Akkers discusses plans to expand existing projects and explores the feasibility of new initiatives, including an ammonia network.

Despite the complexities, collaboration between internal and external stakeholders remains strong, reflecting the collective commitment to progress. Akkers’s dedication extends beyond the workplace, as she implements sustainable practices in her personal life, symbolizing a holistic approach to the energy transition.

The Port of Rotterdam continues to evolve, navigating challenges while advancing towards a sustainable future.
