Evergreen Marine Partners with X-Press Feeders to Pioneer Green Shipping Routes in Europe

Evergreen Marine Corporation, one of the world’s leading container shipping lines, has taken a groundbreaking step towards a sustainable future by signing a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with X-Press Feeders. The latter, recognized as the world’s largest independent common carrier, is set to introduce Europe’s first feeder network powered by green methanol.

The MOA solidifies Evergreen’s commitment to sustainability, positioning it as a key player in fostering green initiatives within the shipping industry. The collaborative effort between Evergreen and X-Press Feeders aims to operate 14 dual fuel green methanol vessels within Europe and the Mediterranean, with delivery scheduled from Q2 2024 through mid-2026.

X-Press Feeders has taken a proactive stance by securing a firm contract with Dutch fuel supplier OCI Global for the supply of ISCC-EU certified green methanol, derived from the sustainable decomposition of organic matter. This bio-methanol serves as a renewable energy source, aligning with the companies’ shared goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Francis Goh, Chief Operating Officer of X-Press Feeders, highlights the urgency behind their decision, stating, “We are pioneering the use of dual-fuel vessels and we decided to take delivery of our vessels sooner, rather than later because we know we need to take significant steps today to meet the targets for reductions in GHG emissions.”

The companies envision a ripple effect, encouraging stakeholders such as port operators, fuel suppliers, logistics companies, freight-forwarders, and beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) to join them in prioritizing sustainable shipping practices. Goh emphasizes collaboration, stating, “By working together, step by step, we can achieve so much more.”
