Allelys Engineers Successful Installation of Turbine and Generator

Allelys, the logistics and heavy transport specialists, have achieved a milestone in their latest project by seamlessly installing a turbine and a generator through the roof of a turbine hall, strategically minimizing site disruption. The operation involved handling a turbine weighing 160 tons and measuring 7.8m (length) x 5.35m (width) x 4.6m (height).

Complex Logistics Triumph

The intricate operation began at Goole docks, where Allelys utilized the LG1550 mobile crane for the discharge of the vessel carrying the substantial turbine. The turbine was then carefully positioned onto stools at the port for temporary storage, showcasing Allelys’ meticulous planning and execution.

When the site team signaled readiness, Allelys constructed a remarkable 24-axle girder frame trailer around the stools, facilitating the self-loading of the cargo for efficient transportation to Skelton Grange. Garnaud Tsika, Commercial Manager at Allelys, highlighted the thorough planning involved, including route surveys, transport arrangement designs, and a swept path analysis.

Innovative Solutions Overcome Challenges

Allelys encountered challenges with two on-site structures, Wyke Beck Bridge and Effluent Culvert. Traditional 16-axle girder frames were deemed unsuitable, prompting Allelys to engineer a groundbreaking solution – a bigger and lighter frame. This ingenious approach allowed the safe negotiation of the structures, ensuring a smooth and secure transportation route.

The A1 experienced a night-time closure during the transportation stage, providing the necessary clearance for the cargo to cross over and join the M1. At the site, the turbine was transshipped from the girder frame onto a 12-axle Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) due to space restrictions. Simultaneously, a 96-ton generator underwent a similar process, demonstrating Allelys’ expertise in handling diverse components.

Precision in Construction Constraints

Navigating through the challenges of a turbine hall under construction, Allelys showcased their adaptability. With meticulous planning, they modified the crane location and positioned the outriggers in non-load-bearing areas to adhere to construction restrictions. The LG1550 crane, rigged in a luffing jib configuration due to the 22.3m building height, lifted and installed both the turbine and generator with exceptional precision.
