EXMAR Pioneers World’s First Ammonia-Dual Fuel Ships: A Leap Towards Decarbonized Shipping

EXMAR LPG BV, a collaboration between EXMAR and Seapeak, is set to revolutionize the maritime industry with the world’s inaugural ocean-going ammonia dual-fueled ships. This innovative stride towards decarbonization marks a significant milestone in the evolution of next-generation shipping.

The Ammonia Propulsion Breakthrough

The venture has greenlit the integration of WinGD’s cutting-edge X DF-A dual fuel engines into vessels originally commissioned in 2022. Remarkably, these engines secured class approval in September 2022, solidifying their status as trailblazers in ammonia two-stroke engine technology. These engines will be paired with a state-of-the-art fuel supply system developed by Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.

Engineering Marvels Taking Shape

The vessels, ordered in 2022 from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, will stretch approximately 623 feet in length. Sporting a capacity of 45,000 cubic meters, they will offer the versatility to transport either ammonia or LPG. According to the shipyard, they are slated for delivery by May 2026.

EXMAR: Pioneers in Alternative Fueled Vessels

“These orders for ammonia dual fuel LPG/NH3 carriers represent further evidence of EXMAR acting as a first mover in the adoption of alternative fueled vessels for the global supply chain,” remarked Lloyd’s Register. Boasting over four decades of expertise in handling ammonia cargo, EXMAR currently commands a fleet comprising 17 midsize gas carriers, three very large gas carriers, and 10 pressurized vessels.

Safety at the Core

Working alongside HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, Wärtsilä, WinGD, and LR, EXMAR’s project capitalizes on their extensive experience in gas handling. Addressing the challenges of designing safe ammonia-fueled vessels, the project prioritizes safety and tackles the intricacies associated with this fuel in comparison to methane and other alternatives.

A Leap Forward in Maritime Technology

Hyundai Mipo heralds the successful development of dual-fuel ammonia ships as the latest achievement in their quest to pioneer new technologies. In 2020, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering secured basic certification for an ammonia dual-fuel engine from Lloyd’s Register, followed by the development of an ammonia fuel supply system in 2021.

Charting the Course for Ammonia-Propelled Vessels

LR positions this venture at the vanguard of the burgeoning trend in ammonia-propelled vessels. Orders for ammonia-ready designs have already been placed, underscoring the industry’s shift towards sustainable propulsion methods. Beyond these new gas carriers, LR is collaborating with China’s SDARI and MAN Energy Solutions on designs for a dual-fuel 3,200 TEU containership and has received an AiP for Hyundai Mipo’s 10,000 cubic meter ammonia bunkering vessel.

In embracing this groundbreaking venture, EXMAR is not only ushering in a new era of sustainable shipping but also reaffirming its position as an industry pioneer in alternative fuel adoption.
