Finnlines Unveils Ultra-Green Hybrid Ro-Ro Vessels for Sustainable Shipping

In an event Toro y Betolaza terminal in the Port of Bilbao, Finnlines, a subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group, introduced its revolutionary Finneco series, comprising three state-of-the-art hybrid ro-ro vessels. These ships represent a significant leap forward in sustainability, setting new standards for eco-friendly cargo transport in Northern Europe and beyond.

A Pinnacle of Efficiency and Sustainability

The Finneco series, including “Finneco I”, “Finneco II”, and “Finneco III”, showcases Finnlines’ and the Grimaldi Group’s unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. These vessels employ cutting-edge technology, featuring lithium battery systems for emission-free and quiet maneuvering, as well as innovations aimed at minimizing environmental impact.

Boasting an impressive 600 m² of solar panels, these ships generate clean power for onboard use. The integration of Promas Lite systems enhances energy efficiency, while an innovative air lubrication system reduces friction and hydrodynamic drag. Meticulous hull design optimizes performance, and carefully selected main engines minimize fuel consumption.

Versatile Transport Solutions

With a capacity of up to 420 semi-trailers or 2,500 vehicles, the Finneco vessels are designed to handle a wide range of cargo types, including specialized loads like wind turbine components. Dedicated car decks and a spacious, temperature-controlled area for containers and project cargo ensure adaptability to modern trade demands. Additionally, the vessels feature a 250-tonne ramp capacity and a generous 7.4-meter interior headroom, ensuring operational flexibility and efficiency.

The Port of Bilbao: A Hub of Innovation

Ricardo Barkala, President of the Port Authority of Bilbao, commended the Grimaldi Group’s dedication to both the port and the maritime industry’s development. He emphasized the port community’s collective commitment to innovation and sustainability, which fosters competitive, environmentally conscious services and contributes to economic growth.

Sebastiano Cirnigliaro, Senior Sales Manager of the Grimaldi Group, underscored the group’s ongoing investments in fleet efficiency and competitiveness. He highlighted the recent addition of the Finneco series, marking a significant step towards greener shipping.

The event, hosted by Toro y Betolaza, exclusive agents of Finnlines, saw contributions from industry experts, including Miguel Pardo, Director of Institutional Relations of the Grimaldi Group, Yves de Larivière, Director at Antwerp Euroterminal, and Evelyne Duthieuw, Commercial Manager at PSA Zeebrugge, further emphasizing the strategic significance of these vessels.

A Legacy of Excellence

With over five decades of operation in the Port of Bilbao, Finnlines’ evolution under the Grimaldi Group’s stewardship has led to a modern and sustainable fleet, connecting ports across ten countries. Their weekly service to and from Bilbao epitomizes their commitment to efficient and competitive cargo transport.
