Hydro Aluminium Metal’s 10-Axle Marvel: Cometto’s ModulMAX SP-E Defies Magnetic Field Challenge

Breaking Boundaries: Norwegian Hydro Aluminium Metal’s new 10-axle self-propelled ModulMAX SP-E transports within intense magnetic fields.

In the energy-intensive world of aluminum production, the halls of Norwegian giant Hydro Aluminium Metal crackle with a powerful magnetic force, measuring in units of gauss. However, defying the odds, Hydro’s recent collaboration with Cometto has birthed a groundbreaking solution – the 10-axle self-propelled ModulMAX SP-E.

Capable of hauling a hefty 250t payload, this industrial behemoth has not only managed to traverse this magnetic minefield but has also maintained functionality within a flux density of 610 gauss.

But the path to this achievement was anything but straightforward. The specialized requirements of the magnetic environment presented unique challenges for the unit’s radio remote control and electronic steering. In such conditions, even inanimate objects like a mechanical wristwatch or an open-end spanner seem to be influenced by an otherworldly force.

Joachim Kolb, the project manager, reveals, “Through targeted shielding protection measures in the area of the electrical valves and around the PC with its electronic control cards, our developers succeeded in making the vehicle suitable for use in such a special environment.”

This remarkable 3,000mm-wide, eight-wheeled self-propelled vehicle, bolstered by Cometto’s expertise, now undertakes the vital task of transporting the PotShell from the production hall to the repair area at Hydro’s plant. Here, it undergoes essential maintenance before shuttling furnace lower shells back to the production hall – a critical process in the aluminum production cycle.

The design of the vehicle combination delivered to Hydro features a 4-axle module with spacer and a 6-axle module. This ingenious arrangement positions the 372kW Powerpack, housing two Tier 5 diesel engines and the driver’s cab, atop each other on the chassis, ensuring optimal visibility for the driver during transportation.

This successful collaboration has seamlessly aligned with all customer requirements, affirming the vehicle’s operational prowess at Karmøy.

With a legacy spanning over a century, Hydro stands at the forefront of aluminum and renewable energy industries. Boasting a workforce of over 31,000 employees across 140 locations in 40 countries, the company has consistently transformed natural resources into invaluable products since its inception in 1905.
