Jan De Nul Boosts Offshore Capabilities with Mega Cable-Laying Vessel

Jan De Nul Group has placed an order for the Fleeming Jenkin, an exceptionally large cable-laying vessel, from the CMHI Haimen shipyard. Boasting an unparalleled cable transport capacity of 28,000 tons, the vessel is set to bolster the sustainable energy and subsea cable industry by facilitating cable installations over longer distances and in deeper waters. The expected delivery of the vessel is slated for 2026.

In response to the evolving needs of the offshore energy sector, Jan De Nul emphasizes the prioritization of installation equipment and human resources. As offshore wind farms extend farther from the coastline, and interconnectivity becomes pivotal for economic and energy security, both markets demand longer, stronger, and heavier cables suitable for deeper waters.

Philippe Hutse, Director of the Offshore Energy Division at Jan De Nul Group, expressed confidence in the energy transition. He stated, “We continue to believe in the energy transition. Following our previous investments in the jack-up installation ship Voltaire and the crane ship Les Alizés for installing the latest generation wind turbines and their foundations, we are now advancing with this impressive cable-laying vessel. Thanks to its unparalleled capabilities, Fleeming Jenkin will be perfectly suited for the interconnector and export cable markets.”

Jan De Nul’s offshore installation fleet will encompass four robust and diverse cable-laying vessels, in addition to two offshore jack-up installation ships, three floating crane installation ships, five rock installation ships, and two multifunctional vessels.

Recognizing that this versatile fleet relies on a strong team, Jan De Nul has initiated the recruitment of additional crew and staff for the operation of Fleeming Jenkin. Supported by a comprehensive internal training program, a multidisciplinary team will be assembled, including dynamic positioning officers, maintenance technicians, cable carousel operators, cable laying supervisors, various specialized offshore technicians, and engineers in civil and mechanical engineering. This team will become an integral part of Jan De Nul’s leading and specialized workforce in the offshore energy sector.
