Japan’s Five Major Companies Collaborate for a Greener Future

Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Inc., IHI Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., collectively referred to as the “Five Companies,” have officially initiated a joint study for the establishment of an ammonia supply base in the Soma area of Fukushima Prefecture.

Ammonia, recognized as a carbon-free fuel with zero carbon dioxide emissions upon combustion, is gaining prominence as a potent tool in the fight against global warming. With the capability to substitute traditional fossil fuels, ammonia emerges as a next-generation energy source pivotal for industrial decarbonization and power generation. Additionally, it holds promise as a hydrogen carrier, playing a vital role in creating a hydrogen society where hydrogen serves as a primary energy source.

The comprehensive study encompasses research into creating a base for importing, storing, and supplying clean ammonia from overseas to the Soma area. The Five Companies are keen on exploring opportunities for a broad-area supply base, conducting a demand survey for both hydrogen and ammonia. As part of their commitment to environmental responsibility, the companies will also delve into the decarbonization of plants, collaborating with power generation, steel, paper, and chemical companies to anticipate future demand.

The synergy of knowledge from each entity aims to extend the realm of decarbonization throughout the Tohoku region. Leveraging the Soma Area as a hub, the ambitious project intends to construct an ammonia supply base that not only contributes to environmental goals but also stimulates the region’s economic development.

As the study advances, the cooperation of Fukushima Prefecture, Soma City, and Shinchi Town becomes crucial. This partnership between the public and private sectors is poised to materialize a project that not only addresses regional decarbonization but also fosters economic growth.

In the quest for a sustainable and environmentally conscious future, the Five Companies are laying the groundwork for a transformative project. Stay tuned as they navigate the complexities of establishing an ammonia supply base, contributing significantly to Japan’s commitment to green energy.
