Joyful Christening of MV Vertom Joy Marks Milestone for Vertom, Europe Caribbean Line, and Schram Shipping

Vertom, Europe Caribbean Line (ECL), and Schram Shipping celebrated a significant milestone with the christening of their latest fleet addition, the MV Vertom Joy. The ceremony, led by Joyce Schram, emphasized the success of this collaborative effort, marking a memorable moment in maritime history.

Delivered by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in April 2023, the MV Vertom Joy, initially designed as a DP-2 pipe supply vessel, underwent a transformative makeover by TBSY. The vessel morphed into a versatile Multipurpose Vessel (MPV) and a general cargo ship. After rigorous North Sea sea trials and obtaining class certificates, the ship sailed to China for the installation of two 80-tonne cranes from McGregor, sporting a distinctive touch with its two eye-catching pink cranes.

Kerst Medendorp, TBSY Project Manager, expressed satisfaction with the project’s outcome, highlighting the seamless collaboration between all stakeholders. “The pleasant and professional collaboration has resulted in an ultra-modern ship. Together, we looked at the most future-proof solution for propulsion and onboard systems,” said Medendorp. The ship’s propulsion system, featuring a state-of-the-art diesel-electric system and a cutting-edge power management system from D&A Electric, showcases innovation with an integrated battery bank for peak shaving and reverse power absorption.

Els Branswijk, First Mate at Schram Shipping, shared her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “It is incredibly fascinating to experience the entire construction process from A to Z. We have experienced the collaboration with TBSY as very pleasant: we worked with a top team and were able to provide our seafaring experience as input for the design of the MV Vertom Joy.”

The MV Vertom Joy boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 128.26 meters in length, 17.80 meters in width, and a draught of 8.03 meters, with a deadweight exceeding 11,000 tons. Its cargo capacity of 512,000 cubic feet positions it as a versatile player in the maritime arena. Equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system and a power management system from D&A Electric, powered by Wärtsila and Volvo generator sets, and featuring two efficient Schottel propulsion Ecopellers, the ship exemplifies cutting-edge maritime technology.

Benny Kerkhof, General Manager of Vertraco Shipping, expressed enthusiasm for the MV Vertom Joy, calling it a valuable addition to their liner service. “In addition to our established expertise in the breakbulk segment, this vessel expands our capabilities, offering new possibilities in the project market sector.”

Post-christening, the MV Vertom Joy is set to embark on its maiden voyage to Antwerp, where it will join ECL’s trading line, connecting Europe and the north coast of South America. This achievement solidifies the commitment to innovation and collaboration within the maritime industry.
