The Maasdelta tunnel in Rotterdam has reached a significant milestone as the first sinking element has been successfully placed at the bottom of the Scheur river. After months of preparation, the major immersion operation was carried out with the utmost precision on Friday, marking a crucial step in the tunnel’s construction.
Despite experiencing leakage after the sinking and connection of the tunnel part, the issue was professionally addressed, and the waterway was reopened to shipping. Work is now ongoing, including the application of sand under the tunnel element for the final foundation.
Rijkswaterstaat and construction consortium BAAK (Ballast Nedam and DEME Group) have expressed their gratitude for the patience of shipping during the process. The next step in the project will involve sinking the second part of the tunnel, which is expected to take place soon.
