Maritime Safety Queensland: Ensuring Safer, Cleaner Seas

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) stands as a unique guardian of maritime safety, overseeing a diverse portfolio unparalleled by its peers in Australia. As the primary maritime safety regulator in the sunshine state, MSQ is on a mission to ensure safer and cleaner seas for Queensland.

A Broad Spectrum of Responsibilities

MSQ’s jurisdiction spans the entire spectrum of waterborne activities, ranging from ocean-going trading ships to recreational tinnies and personal watercraft. With a focus on both trade shipping and recreational boating, MSQ tackles maritime safety, ship-sourced pollution, and infrastructure provision. The vast coastline of Queensland, adorned with islands, coral cays, and atolls, necessitates a widespread presence across the Pacific Ocean, Torres Strait, Gulf of Carpentaria, and inland waterways.

Regional Offices and Services

To fulfill its objectives, MSQ operates through five regional offices in Brisbane, Gladstone, Mackay, Townsville, and Cairns. These offices, along with their sub-offices in maritime hubs, serve as strategic centers for Vessel Traffic Services, aids to navigation, boating safety education, regulation enforcement, and response to marine pollution incidents.

Smartship Australia: A Hub for Training and Development

At the forefront of maritime training, MSQ operates Smartship Australia, a state-of-the-art facility in Brisbane. Celebrating its second decade, the facility attracts clients from Australia, the South Pacific, and Southeast Asia, offering simulator-based training for pilot organizations, shipping, and towage companies.

Safeguarding Recreational Boating

MSQ actively engages with the recreational boating community, numbering over a million license holders. Through education, regulation enforcement, and the BoatSafe program, MSQ sets and monitors licensing standards, encouraging compliance with safety regulations. The Maritime Enforcement Team, equipped with high-speed boats, ensures safety by targeting spots on waterways.

Combatting Ship-Sourced Marine Pollution

MSQ invests significantly in preventing and responding to ship-sourced pollution. Rigorous licensing standards, compulsory pilotage, and vigilant VTS Centres form the primary defense. In case of incidents, MSQ maintains a fleet of pollution response vessels and conducts regular simulated response exercises to ensure readiness.

War on Wrecks: Environmental Protection Initiative

The “War on Wrecks” program, initiated in 2018, addresses the environmental threat posed by unseaworthy or abandoned wrecks. Extended till June 2025 with additional funding, the program, in collaboration with MSQ, has successfully removed or remediated over 1,200 wrecks, making waterways safer and cleaner.

Infrastructure Development for Safe Water Access

MSQ plays a pivotal role in providing safe and equitable access to waterways through the construction of boat ramps, pontoons, and floating walkways. The Maritime Infrastructure and Investment Program, averaging $30 million annually, supports the development of critical infrastructure. MSQ also manages state boat harbors and ensures precise tidal information for safe navigation.

Fostering Innovation in the Maritime Industry

Recognizing the evolving landscape of society, technology, and industry, MSQ administers the “Backing Queensland Maritime Jobs” grants program, injecting $21 million to stimulate investment in maritime businesses, skills, and jobs.

A Legacy of Service

With a legacy dating back to 1862, MSQ boasts 160 years of dedicated service to Queensland’s maritime sector. The organization remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, ensuring a proud record of safeguarding Queensland’s waters.

In the relentless pursuit of safer and cleaner seas, MSQ continues to evolve, adapt, and uphold its reputation as a stalwart guardian of maritime safety.
