COSCO Shipping Development has successfully acquired two cutting-edge 700TEU electric container ships, named N997 and N998. These vessels, a testament to innovation and sustainable shipping practices, were meticulously constructed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. December 28.
Pioneering Electric Container Vessels: “Zhongyuan Haiyun Lvshui 01” and “Zhongyuan Haiyun Lvshui 02” mark a historic milestone as the world’s first electric container vessels designed for River-Sea Direct Service. COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry spearheaded the independent research, design, and manufacturing of these ships, securing crucial intellectual property rights.
This development represents not only an advancement in green technology but also signifies the initiation of this project—the largest electric ship endeavor currently underway in China.
Measuring an impressive 119.8 meters in length and 23.6 meters in beam, these electric container ships are powered by 36 interchangeable marine containerized batteries. The sheer magnitude of their energy storage capacity is staggering, holding the capability to accommodate over 800 new energy vehicles. This unparalleled battery capacity positions the vessels at the forefront of global electric ship initiatives.
Movable Power Exchange System: What sets these ships apart is their innovative movable power exchange system, akin to a box. The system allows for the seamless refilling of the colossal battery capacity. This groundbreaking technology further solidifies COSCO Shipping’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainability within the maritime sector.
In terms of loaded boxes, deadweight tonnage, and 100% electric container vessel battery capacity, the “Zhongyuan Haiyun Lvshui” series takes the lead on a global scale. Its preset battery capacity surpasses that of existing international and domestic ship types, setting a new standard for the industry.
Maiden Voyage on the Horizon: Anticipation surrounds the inaugural voyage of “Zhongyuan Haiyun Lvshui 01,” scheduled to commence in mid-to late-January 2024. The vessel is expected to navigate the “Nanjing-Yangshan” route, demonstrating the practicality and viability of electric container ships in real-world maritime operations.
This groundbreaking achievement by COSCO Shipping not only propels the maritime industry into a new era of sustainability but also establishes China as a key player in the global electric shipping landscape.
