Maryland Plans Swift Rebuild of Francis Scott Key Bridge After Tragic Collapse

Maryland authorities have announced plans for the expeditious reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, following its collapse in March. The project, estimated to cost between US$1.7 billion and US$1.9 billion, aims to erect a new span by fall of 2028, according to David Broughton, a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Transportation.

The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of six roadwork crew members, halted operations at the port of Baltimore, one of the busiest in the nation. Salvage efforts have since been ongoing, with the recovery of the fifth victim, Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez 49, of Glen Burnie Maryland, marking a somber milestone in the aftermath of the collapse.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed condolences for Luna Gonzalez’s family and all affected by the tragedy, emphasizing the state’s commitment to supporting those impacted by the disaster.

As salvage teams continue their work, preparations are underway to float and remove the Dali container ship, which has been stationary amidst the wreckage since the collapse. Crews anticipate its removal by May 10, facilitating the resumption of maritime traffic through Baltimore’s port.

The salvage and demolition process is progressing rapidly, with crews focused on clearing the wreckage and preparing for controlled demolitions to dismantle remaining sections of the bridge. Utilizing cutting-edge equipment, including a massive hydraulic grabber and one of the largest cranes on the Eastern Seaboard, salvage teams are working tirelessly to restore normalcy to the region’s maritime operations.

The state’s efforts to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge are aligned with similar projects of comparable scale and complexity. With federal funding, insurance proceeds, and other resources allocated towards the reconstruction effort, Maryland aims to minimize the financial burden on taxpayers and toll customers.

Despite the challenges posed by the collapse, Maryland remains steadfast in its commitment to restoring the Francis Scott Key Bridge and ensuring the safety and efficiency of its transportation infrastructure.
